Duchess Meghan’s Clevr Blends investment supports genocidal oat milk powder??
Back in December, the Duchess of Sussex invested in Clevr Blends, an oat-milk latte company based in or around Montecito. Clevr Blends is a female-owned business, and now Meghan is a major investor. Oprah promoted the lattes on her Instagram, giving the brand millions of dollars worth of free publicity. Then the British media got involved, throwing a series of hissy fits about all of it, which (of course) gave the brand millions of dollars in free publicity. It took the British press nearly four full months, but they finally found a way to attack Meghan’s Clevr Blends investment. Meghan is supporting an oat-milk supplier which is… adjacent to Chinese forced-labor camps? It’s a spectacular reach, but you get the picture. First her cookbook was supporting terrorism, then her love of avocado toast supported drought and murder, and now her investment in a latte company supports forced labor camps.
Meghan Markle‘s money is behind a trendy instant coffee brand that she touts for its ethically sourced ingredients, but the company has received tens of thousands of pounds of oat milk powder from a Chinese state accused of genocide, a new report claims. Clevr Blends’ oat milk supplier — Xinjiang Haiyan International Trade — is located within four miles of suspected detention centers, including an alleged re-education site, according to The Daily Mail.
The California-based company bills itself as a “woman-led, mission-driven wellness company,” even though human rights groups have urged Western companies to cut ties with the Xinjiang region due to systematic rapes there and the detention of a million Muslims in re-education forced labor camps, according to the report.
Clevr received five large deliveries of oat milk powder from Xinjiang Haiyan between October and February, The Daily Mail reports. Fashion companies like H&M, Burberry have refused to source cotton from the Chinese state over forced-labor concerns, according to the article.
Although there is no evidence the company uses forced labor, human rights activists reportedly said it is impossible to rule it out.
“It’s virtually impossible to be sure that any workplace in the Uighur region is free from forced labor, so no responsible business should wish to trade with any organization based there,” Chloe Cranston of Anti-Slavery International told the paper. “Any investor – regardless of who they are – should hold their portfolio companies accountable on their ties to the Uighur region.”
“Ethics are always at the forefront of our product. We prioritize working with smaller, family-run ingredient suppliers or those with more transparent supply chains,” the company’s website reads.
A representative for Clevr Blends told the newspaper it did not know about the questionable connection. “I personally have no awareness of this issue and feel convinced that Clevr would never intentionally hire companies with such practices. Thank you for bringing this to our awareness,” the spokesperson said.
Markle’s representatives did not respond to a request for comment from The Daily Mail. Sources close to the former actress told the paper she would not work with a company that doesn’t uphold the highest ethical standards and human rights protections.
I understand the way globalization works and all of that, but is anyone else surprised that a granola-crunching, female-owned small business in Montecito would outsource their oat milk powder from China? That doesn’t even ring true to me, and it feels like any California company in need of oat milk powder would find it a lot easier (and not cost prohibitive) to simply find a North American supplier, or failing that, a South American supplier. But anyway, I’m happy that the press finally found a way to once again make asses out of themselves with regard to anything and everything Meghan does. I can’t believe that they haven’t found a way to blame her for A) greenhouse gases, B) Covid-19, C) the declining bee population and D) failed immigration policies. Sh-t, did I give them some ideas?
